How to replace the air filter and cabin (pollen) filter
The difference between the engine air filter and the cabin (pollen) filter, when to replace them, how to do it yourself and the direction arrow to watch when fitting.
A car has two separate air filters, and they are often confused. The air filter cleans the air the engine breathes. The pollen filter (cabin or air conditioning filter) cleans the air inside, the air the passengers breathe. On most cars, both can be changed without any tools.
When should they be replaced?
- Air filter: At the interval in the service schedule, and more often on cars used on dusty or dirt roads. If you cannot see light through the filter and its surface has darkened, it is time to replace it.
- Pollen filter: Usually once a year. Check it sooner if the air conditioning smells bad, the airflow has weakened or the windows fog up easily.
Replacing the air filter
- Find the air filter box. It is a plastic box on top of or beside the engine, connected to the throttle body by a hose.
- Open the cover. It is held by clips, a wing screw or a few screws.
- Remove the old filter and wipe out the box. If leaves or dust have collected, clean it with a damp cloth. Do not drop anything inside the box.
- Fit the new filter the same way round. The edge seal must sit fully in its groove.
- Close the cover and check all the clips. A gap at the edge lets in unfiltered air.
Replacing the pollen filter
On most cars the pollen filter is behind the glovebox; on some it is under the plastic cover below the windscreen. Empty the glovebox and press its side tabs inwards so it drops down; then open the cover behind it and pull out the filter.
Activated carbon pollen filters trap odours and exhaust fumes better, which makes them a good choice for cars driven in the city. You can find filters that fit your car on the filters & parts page.
FAQ
What happens if the air filter is clogged?
The engine cannot get enough air; performance can drop and fuel consumption can rise.
Does the pollen filter affect the air conditioning?
Yes. A clogged pollen filter weakens the airflow and can cause bad smells.
